Historical education / 2024-06-12

Two announcements. One daily yield decline.

May CPI was flat month over month, then the Fed held its policy range. Daily Treasury yields fell; that alone cannot separate the two announcements.

Confidence not assessed. Daily association, not proof of causation.

Interpretation / editorial hypotheses

Mechanism & alternatives

These explanations are proposed from the cited facts, not statements made by the sources.

  1. Possible mechanism

The flat CPI reading could have reduced inflation or expected policy-rate pressure, consistent with lower yields. This is an interpretation, not a measured attribution.

  2. Alternatives

The afternoon Fed communication, positioning or changing term premia could also affect the daily curve. A same-day observation cannot isolate the morning CPI effect.

What would challenge the explanation?

Compare licensed intraday observations around each announcement. A decline outside the CPI window would weaken a CPI-led explanation; daily endpoints cannot run that test.

No survey consensus is stored, so no inflation surprise is quantified. No intraday effect, abnormal return or causal share is estimated.
